Little Navy Trench

Jessica Wagner

Wardrobe Essentials

Early days of spring call for classic, always in style, winter-to-spring transitional pieces.

Enter: The trench coat.

No surprise, this all-weather overcoat is a wardrobe essential. Iconic in wear, it's a versatile piece that flatters every silhouette. It’s also reliable against the elements.

Perhaps its golden status has to do with its popularity among style icons. Everyone from Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, to Kate Moss has been known to slip one on. Past or present, it has a chameleon-like ability to adapt to the moment.

For such a legendary piece, I thought it would be effective (and fun) to show it styled two ways on location. Exploring the city of Cleveland is something I haven't done much besides the random visit to enjoy the vibrant nightlife or sporting event. I grew up a mere 15 minutes from the downtown metropolis and enjoyed seeing the city thriving and alive early Saturday morning. We grabbed some much needed coffee from Colossal Cupcake and walked E. 4th Street. After that, we drained our cups sitting by the lake at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Before I get too ahead of myself, allow me to introduce the biggest sweetheart you will ever meet, my younger sister Kelly.

Kelly is an apparel manager with Anthropologie in Lexington, Kentucky. Always in the know on the latest trends, she is my first consultant when it comes to fashion. She knows how to wear a LBD like a champ, and understands the value of understated, elegant ensembles.

Kell purchased this Anthropologie fit-and-flare trench coat a few weeks ago. Before I had my arm through the sleeve I knew I would follow suit. The navy color is fresh and the fit is everything. Usually, I am the enabler when it comes to convincing an apparel purchase. That being said, I try not to be blindly enthusiastic. Deciding what pieces are worth the splurge is one of my talents, and when it comes to this timeless trench, I wholeheartedly stand behind it as a solid investment.

There is something alluring and masculine about a trench coat, which is why it’s the perfect contrast to a feminine cocktail dress. Kelly and I agreed on this point, down to the color. Although Kell and I have similar taste, as you can see, we have different ways of styling. While I tend to go glam, Kelly leans towards a more streamlined and charming way of dressing.

When selecting the right trench for you, look for classic details. Elements like the storm patch, wrist cuffs, and belt are what make this outerwear option a universal staple. Though originally created for utilitarian purposes, they now double as fashionable accents. Once you find your trench coat-soulmate enjoy pairing it with everything from jeans and an understated top, to your own “little white dress.”

While few fashion items have stood the test of time, the trench coat has the ultimate staying power.
