Athleisure Layers

Jessica Wagner

style + comfort

Getting dressed this time of year can be perplexing. It’s 29 degrees and snowing one day and 65 and sunny the next. You want to stay warm, look cool. Athleisure is a way to combine style and comfort for a chill (or chilly) day. By wearing a smart mix of lightweight layers between spring and winter, you’re sure to be set.

Athleisure is a stylish spin on the comfy sportswear you slip into on the weekends. It combines athleticwear with pieces from your everyday wardrobe and it’s perfect for a casual day spent lounging. Sure, leggings and sneakers are meant for fitness, but they can look just as fab outside the gym. Tennies with a dainty dress and red lip? Makes perfect sense to me!

The trick to rocking athleisure without looking like you actually just walked out of the gym is in how you style your pieces. When searching for athletic street-wear you want to fuse function and fashion.

I went for a menswear-inspired duster coat. It's a long, lean style you can wear with almost anything. It kept me cozy in fall and is quickly becoming my go-to favorite for spring. You can wear a super simple outfit, throw on this coat and look instantly effortless. Tall and streamlined. When styled with black retro sneakers, this look goes from classic-minimalist to sporty-chic.

Whether it’s leggings with a longer coat and scarf, or a cropped-tee and denim jacket with crisp white sneakers, sporting athleticwear all day has become more acceptable. Think preppy baseball caps, a sporty leather backpack, or letterman style jacket.  It’s also a really accessible look. Fitness brands are working hard to blur lines between the locker room and everyday wear. From a strictly fashion standpoint, it’s a refreshing combo and a great option if you want to look stylish going from the house to the gym.

When shopping for athleticwear ask yourself, “Can I wear this from the yoga studio to the street?” Then enjoy crusin' around the city in your comfy sneaks!
