Fall Dreaming

Jessica Wagner

The Classic Trench Coat

Classic basics styled well, will always be in fashion.

This weekend take one last stroll in the pumpkin patch dreaming of fall and all the beautiful fashion it brings.

One of my absolute favorite fall wardrobe staples is a must-have for any closet – a classic trench coat. (See this post for a flirty version in navy.)

You can wear this coat so many ways, layered over tees, turtlenecks, sweaters, and even dresses depending on the temps. It looks just as cute with heels and white sneaks. Styled well, a trench coat has great versatility, lending itself to multiple occasions and all kinds of weather.

I can’t remember the exact moment I started to develop a true style uniform, but I know it wasn’t until after college that an appreciation for well-made items began to emerge (let’s face it, who can afford anything nice in college anyway?!)

When adding classics to your wardrobe, laying a strong foundation of essentials is a great starting point. A tailored coat, a white tee, and a well-fitting pair of blue jeans are classics that look fantastic when worn on their own, or paired together.  This outfit is made up of things I wear constantly. White tennies, a simple black tote, and dark oversize shades. All great things to have in your arsenal.

This combo is an easy way to layer for a cool fall weekend, plus these items can all be worn again, and again (most are probably already in your closet!)

The focal point is this neutral vanilla-latte colored trench coat. While this is a wonderful wardrobe essential I have talked about before (here) this particular coat is a true classic version. I’ve had this in my closet for the last 5 years now, and somehow it never feels old. It’s been worn a lot, but shows little wear and tear. That’s the beauty of pieces like this. They don’t come and go out of style, and when made well they last, making it worth the purchase. When you spot that perfect one, don’t let it go. I promise you won’t regret it.

Fashion becomes less fleeting when you’ve identified a formula that works for you. Investing in classic pieces makes sense when you know they’ll have an everlasting place in your wardrobe. Of course tastes will evolve, but a foundation of classics will allow you to experiment with trends while staying true to yourself.
