A Modern Take On Corsets

Jessica Wagner

Weekend Uniform {Elevated}

When I saw a casual corset top on the cover of Porter magazine's Spring 2017 issue I fell in love with Natalia Vodianova, her Chloé top, and Isabel Marant belt. On a mission to recreate this chic combo, I jumped out of my seat when I came across a similar piece at Zara for under $30. Of course I didn't buy it and it sold out! Luck has it; the eyelet-fastening top came back in stock (and still is available in all sizes!) I can't get enough of this elevated version of the white tee.

The corset is back, but not in the traditional way you're thinking – it’s being used in a street-style friendly way - cinched over a midi dress or an oversized shirt. While this garment constrained waists in the 1800s, it’s being used today for fashion purposes. (Plus, it seriously does keeps your waist in check. I am pretty straight up and down and this top made me feel like a curvacious Marilyn Monroe!)

What I love about this particular top, is it's all one piece. It's a great option for styling if you don't have a lace up corset, or the thought of styling one is intimidating. It’s a wardrobe piece that still defines femininity brought up-to-date when layered over other clothing. So, yeah, it’s actually a little tricky.

A few key points to rocking this look. Keep your makeup minimal and hair a bit “un-done.” Stick to a monochromatic color pallet. Mind the structure of the rest of your outfit – balance out the tight corset with other layers. Overal the best advice is, keep it simple. (If you need more inspo Pinterest is a goldmine and Zara has a ton of other corset options.)

I viewed this top as a chance to elevate my weekend usual – I switched out my plain tee for the lace-up corset belt, my white sneaks for my pointed white mules and layered on a white blazer instead of my duster (last seen here.) Oh, and don't forget your third piece!

The best part of elevating a regular look? A new bag for spring! I picked up this neutral tote from J&G and they are offering all my followers a special 15% off discount with the code "WEEKENDER15" at checkout!! (Shop all their handbags here.) I was on the hunt for a new "everyday bag" and picked the Madison Tote for it's metal hardware, medium size and structure. I have been looking for just the right bag to swap out from winter to spring and this is "it" for sure! So easy pair with everything, and sturdy enough to handle day-to-day use.

While not all of the trends we see at fashion week make it to mainstream, every year a handful of them do. This season, that standout look is the corset. Give it a try, and know you won’t have to be shy when going for that extra fry! :)
