Glamping

Jessica Wagner

Backpack Tramp

Attention troops: looking for an upgrade to your weekend getaway? For maximum rest and relaxation the combination of glamour and camping – glamping – is the answer. Forget about tents and sleeping bags, and prepare to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing luxury.

We recently spent the weekend in Hocking Hills, Ohio for one of my best friend’s bachelorette soirées. We stayed in a glorious wooded cabin (that was really more of a private lodge, check it out the link here) complete with a built in pool, hot tub and to-die-for cathedral ceilings. Fireplaces, cozy corners, a theatre room, you know all the necessary amenities. (Ah-hem. So basically camping, but without all the “uncomfortable” negatives.)

We had a fabulous first night roasting marshmallows under the stars with multiple dips in the hot tub and an early morning trek to Old Man’s Cave, where we got to scope out the waterfalls and cavernous sandstone rock walls. Equal parts terrifying and amazing. (I get a little queasy when things start to get super steep.)

It was a fun way to discover Ohio’s history straight from the rocks. The best part was after sweating it out on the trail, we arrived back at our cabin (to air conditioning) and drank champs all afternoon while floating on our basic swan floats. If you are looking for a place to 'Glamp' with a big group this is the way to do it.

Seeking a backpack adventure I went ‘Indiana Jones meets Troop Beverly Hills.’ (Both solid movie character choices for hardcore outdoor outfit inspo if you ask me. Minus needing a whip, I felt ready to lead a Wilderness Troop.)

An oversize trail hat offers UV protection, and a wide stiff brim keeps the sun and rain off your face and neck. Bonus if you choose a topper for breathability, comfort and durability. I mostly chose mine for style.

A soft cotton tee that breathes is a must for adventuring in the great outdoors. I seriously love this fabric. Cotton is soft, absorbent and breathable. (Plus it doesn’t cling.)

If you are feeling trendy, there’s a cool new tee in town. This basic gets a cheeky upgrade with embroidery across the upper pocket.  This is the easiest way to elevate your look and make a clever statement. (Love this one and this one.) If you are resourceful enough, create your own with a swift stitch. (Add a tiny heart, initials, or an "insert here" above a pocket would be cute.)

Comfortable shorts and walking shoes are a must. Leather combat boots offer support and still make a statement. Thick socks will also take you to the end of your excursion blister free.

Last but not least, the western standby, a bandana. It's an accessory I have been wearing a number of years, and a must-have styling staple. It doesn't have to be paisley. A simple print like dots, stripes or even a solid will do. Perfectly knotted around your neck, as a headband or strung around your bag strap, this third piece is a majorly modern look.

Glamper or camper, you don't have to be outdoorsy to climb mountains. Sure it's nice to be warm and comfortable, but get at it Huckleberry Finn. Run in the mountain forest, sleep among the trees. I remember growing up, being outdoors, exploring, collecting rocks and fairies alike. All that space. Everywhere. Sound and color. A whole world hangs outside your window. Then you can go get a good night sleep in your feather bed and temperature controlled rooms.
